So, from first glance, his outer-coat is fairly unprepossessing... I couldn't get a decent picture of his parted fleece, so we'll have to wait for me to get to a scanner to get some images of his staples I nabbed for sampling. Histogram samples going to Texas A&M tomorrow. Will update.
Very good distinction between the two coats. His outer-coat seperates perfectly and the inner is dense, stylish, lustrous and fine, fine.
Check out that tail and that bite! Strong, level topline, good rib, big gut, soft flank, deep hocks, correct pasterns... Hmmm... Nice horns too!
The test will also come at roo. We won't keep a Shetland ram that won't break cleanly and evenly. Rise is certainly not pleasant to shear through, over, under or whatever, BUT, these are Bronze Age stock developed before shearing equipment made its way to the islands. Breeding this trait true, is crucial to maintaining the Primitive integrity of the breed.
I think he has the makings to produce outstanding, range-ready daughters. He has thirty-some head of mature ewes this fall.
I am looking for a facility to collect and process semen from this ram to VAI and LAI straws. Profits would go to fund Ann's 4H program in Gunnison County.
